21st Century Living for Europe: mixed use with affordable housing - Gateshead
There is clear recognition that the real task in developing waterfronts is to create sustainable neighbourhoods or new urban villages, usually characterised by higher density and mixed uses. The 21st neighbourhood should integrate various income levels and have an urban design framework which is livable and sustainable.
Gateshead explored innovative solutions to community living in partnership with fashion designers (Wayne and Geraldine Hemingway) and builders (Wimpey Homes) in the Staithes South Bank development. They worked with BoKlok in the St James Village with the first build of IKEA housing in the UK. Both of these projects experimented with challenging the standard residential developersŐ product. These new developments are being assessed against ten 21st century living criteria developed with transnational partners.
