Schiedam
The municipality of Schiedam forms part of the Rotterdam Region (1.2 million). The city has a population of 70,000 and cooperates closely with its larger neighbour Rotterdam (600,000), the largest port in Europe and the gateway to northwestern Europe.
Schiedam focused on the Schieveste development, a mixed use brownfield site development where the main challenge is of a social nature. Social integration in this case relates to the feeling of ownership of Schieveste by the Scheidam residents.
Officers from the Municipality of Schiedam and Researchers from the Vervey-Jonker Institute are leading on the Social Integration theme. For the purpose of the project, Social Integration is defined as: the interaction between new and existing communities and the adoption of and identification with a new area by existing inhabitants.
Key challenges faced by Schiedam include unemployment, low household income and educational attainment amongst the work force. Interreg funding is being used to help address the specific challenge of integrating existing and new communities in the new Schieveste area. The aim of this work is to create an integrated 'place' which will serve as an important node in regional, national and international transport network.
