Odense

Odense is the 3rd largest city in Denmark with a population of 185,000 and is located on the Island of Funen (450,000). Home to the University of Southern Denmark, the city has a student population of 40,000.

The Odense pilot project focuses on the Inner Harbour, a man-made port several kilometres from Odense Fiord and the open sea, for which a master plan has already been drawn up for the 130 hectare site to include housing cultural activities and office developments.

The key challenge for the City of Odense is that the city's waterfront is virtually unknown by the public, who have turned their back on the waterfront as it has become industrialised and polluted. The city now aspires to bridge the old with the new by focusing on the harbour's history and to make best use of existing facilities. Odense is focusing on activities to bring the public to the harbour.

As part of the project, Odense led on the theme 'bridging activities' to enable the building of public awareness of the harbour area.
