Kingston Upon Hull
The City of Hull has a population of 250,000 and is part of a complex of ports based on the Humber Estuary, which also includes Goole, Immingham and Grimsby. Together, the four ports constitute the fourth largest ports complex in Europe. Hull and the Humber Ports have recently been designated as one of the North of England's eight "city-regions" as part of the Northern Way initiative.
As part of the Waterfront Communities Project, Hull has led on the theme 'Organisational models' looking at the role of Special Purpose Vehicles. Hull Citybuild was set up to create and deliver a dynamic and coherent physical regeneration strategy for the city, with particular attention to waterfront areas and their integration with city centre improvements.
The key challenges faced by Hull are the integration of public and private sectors objectives, that is, economic development with social development and biophysical sustainability; and, the integration if new land uses in the waterfront with adjacent land uses and within the broader city framework.
Hull has also contributed to the theme 'Waterfront and the City Region' led by Edinburgh and 'Urban design quality and the public realm' led by Aalborg.
