Gothenburg
Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden with a population of 475,800 inhabitants in a region of 850,000 people. The city is situated at the mouth of the Göta Älv River and has been - and still is - the most important port in the Nordic countries.
Traditionally dependent on the automotive, ship building and port industries, Gothenburg is now host to a wide range of high tech industries including IT, automotive, transport, medicine, culture and media production. The traditional shipyard area Norra Älvstranden is emerging as a new district with a range of companies, university buildings and residential areas.
As part of the Waterfront Communities Project, Gateshead led on the theme 'visioning and consensus' focusing on the pilot project area of Östra Kvillebäcken, a waterfront hinterland area with a number of specific challenges including a poor quality environment, a housing shortage, and a concentration of small industries and more marginal/criminal/illegal activities to address.
